Mateus

Finally a short 30 minute bus ride this morning! In the town of Villa Real is the Castle Mateus. It was built in 1739 with very pretty gardens. The ceilings are quite different than most baroque castles, they are decorated with chestnut wood designs. They library had been refinished and was exceptionally pretty. The family that owned the castle put it in a foundation in the early 1970's. There is also a small chapel.
