Cooking Class & Rodrigo

This morning we learned the secret recipe for making the custard tart or Pastéis de Nata.  Using a simple crust with an egg yolk custard, they can even be made and frozen. Then just pull out a couple and bake. This is Mike, our chef from Germany.
These pictures are from the morning. We went through several locks and then saw some gorgeous scenery. It is very desolate here. Very few people live in this area of Portugal.
After lunch we took a bus about 30 minutes, winding around and up, up, up to Castelo Rodrigo. It is a small medieval village of just 60 people and about three shops. One of the places where Jews went to after 1492 when they were made to leave Spain was Castelo Rodrigo. They stayed there until the same order came down in Portugal in 1496. Then they had to leave or convert their faith.
